Hi,I’m remodeling my kitchen and took down the soffits to be able to get taller wall cabinets. There are some can lights and I want to add a few more now that the ceiling is opened up some. But I was surprised to see these two flat 2x10s in between these two joists. And of course the partially covered one is exactly where I want to add a light.
Anyone know why these 2x10s are there? And if would be ok if I removed the partially covered one?
(This is the first floor of a two story house. Master bedroom is above the kitchen.)
I'm in the process of finishing my basement and doing all of the work. The basement will serve as a home theater. I would like to add a media cabinet in the stair well but, as with most stairwells, the walls are load bearing. I would like to cut out a couple of the studs and add a microlam header like the other beams in the basement. In addition to adding the header, I'd like to rework how the landing is supported as the previous homeowner installed it incorrectly in the first place (by my assessment). How do I go about getting it approved with a structural engineer and my building inspector (obviously it varies state by state, I'm in MN).

A rental I bought has a 2nd floor sunken den and I have to raise the floor. The distance from the old floor in the sunken room to the bottom of the subfloor that it has to match is 8 5/8. The subfloor is 1 inch thick made of 3/4 and 1/4 sheets.
Looking for ideas on what dimension of floor joists and subflooring to use to accomodate that height or am I stuck with buying 10X2's and cutting them to 8 5/8.
