I need your help. I noticed two of the rafter beams on the roof of my attic now converted into a bedroom have cracks in them. They pretty much run through the entire beam. The corner one is bulging out a bit. Is this something I need to be worried about? They’re right over my bed…

The previous owner put in can lights in the ceiling of the basement and put these three, half inch holes in the floor joist. The blue line is the mark I made to show the 2 inch line that the one hole is below. The floor joist is a 2x8 and and the span is 13 feet long. The holes are a little over 4 feet from the edge of the joist. The one hole is about 1 inch from the bottom. Is this a concern?Read More
I am adding a new telepost to take a bit of the sag out of a slightly sagging beam. Was planning on going with a 24" x 24" x 10" footing with rebar, but have read some contradicting info on the internet, so am posting here for clarification.
It is (and always will be) an unfinished basement. Does the post footing need a vapor barrier? Does the footing need to be below, even with, or higher than the finished floor? And what is the best way to connect post to the footing? Can I put the bottom of the post right into the wet cement, can I set some bolts pointing up into the wet cement or do I need to drill out the finished cement and use lag shields?
All opinions are appreciated and thanks!Read More
