Framing question regarding 8x8 post columns on porch

This house is off ground so the top and bottom of the porch consists of wood beams. Right now there are temp studs holding the porch up. If I want to use 8x8 posts and then wrap them in hardie, what is the preferred way to secure the posts to the upper and lower beams while also satisfying any building codes? There are a bunch so cost is a factor. I see 8x8 post bases are almost $100 each. Could I simply use a 12" or 16" 12 gauge strap at the top and bottom? Do I need a continuous strap? Thanks.

Check your local codes for attachment requirements. Depending on your location and the structure of the house there may be hold down requirements. The requirements vary considerably depending on location. Coastal areas prone to hurricanes require pretty significant connections while further inland you can get away with strapping in addition to whatever bracketry to support the posts.
