prep for new stain

We are planning to stain a couple of dressers a different shade. Do we need to strip the old stain off or just sand it and stain over the old stain? The new stain will be darker than the old.

In order for stain to work it must be applied to raw wood = stripping and sanding. Depending on how big a change you wish to make in the woods appearance you might be able to use a tinted poly over the existing finish - it still needs a light sanding and all wax removed.
