Finishing table with two shades of stain

I want to refinish my table so that it has a dark stain on the feet and toward the outside, then slightly lighter toward the middle of the table. I would like the stains to bleed together. No definite lines. I have another piece like this and I would like to match them. Any ideas would be great!

Welcome to the forums!

While I've applied a lot of stain, I've never done what you are wanting but I would think if you applied both colors of stain at the same time and then use a clean rag to wipe the bottom color upward and another rag to wipe the top downward - that should give the desired effect. Practice on some scrap wood first to make sure it will work as you envision and to perfect the technique.

I agree with Mark, your best bet is to apply the same stain all over and let it sit longer on the areas you want darker.

I would practice on some scrap first, I don't think I'd be able to pull off a decent looking job of this without some practice.

Actually I was thinking of 2 different colors of stain.... but after rereading the OP's post, it's quite possible the desired affect can be gotten from 1 color of stain.

At least in my mind, it would be a lot tougher to blend two different colors of stain.

That said, you have way more knowledge of stuff like this than I do.

I've never tried what you are talking about, but it seems like a very cool idea. Trying to get a visual in my head....hm, all i can say is practice before you actually do it. Search more online about it to get all the info you can. post pictures when you're done. I'm curious to see how it turns out.
