can a bookshelf be placed on a desk without causing damage to the desk?
My sister has a rather large desk that she got when she started college. She is trying to be more organized and wants some shelves. We found a small inexpensive bookshelf that is light and easy to fit on her desk. She would like assurance that the bookshelf will not cause the desk to buckle over time. The top of her Armour bent a little after she placed a few storage bins up on top of it, and she doesn't want that to happen to the desk. she really likes the desk and wants it to last her a long time. If you know a lot about carpentry, or any other applicable knowledge that would help give her the assurance (one way or another) that our opinions (without the significant know how to back them up) can't give. Please answer whether or not the small bookshelf (and the books she is planning to put on it) would do any damage to her desk.
I found both items online and have links to show what the desk is
Get the Better Homes and Gardens Desk, Oak at an always low price from Walmart.com. Save money. Live better.
and the bookshelf
3-Shelf Oak Finish Wood Bookcase: Display your stuff with Kmart
She is in college and some of those textbooks can be pretty heavy so the books may add some significant weight. Well, would it be okay for her to put the bookshelf on the desk without fear of it dipping or buckling, or any permanent damaging being done to the desk?

Welcome to the forums!
A lot depends on how much weight is put on it but I would think it would be ok since the desk appears to be support on both ends including 2/3s of the back. Could you post a pic showing the backside of her desk? http://www.doityourself.com/forum/el...-pictures.html

That's an inexpensive particle board desk and shelve unit.
Very possible both will sag with to much weight on them.
May want to consider a real wood face framed book shelve that's wide enough to sit over the legs of the desk.

Well it seems she is going to go with it. Apparently she got her answers herself, and has decided to put the shelving unit up on the desk. The shelving unit is just about half the weight of the desk hutch designed for the desk so she is pretty confident now that it should be okay.
So thank you both for your responses. It is always nice to find a forum where people are helpful to the inexperienced like myself.
