Update chippendale dressers or naw?

I've had my mother's dressers since I was a kid. I've always regarded them as kind of dowdy. Looks like tiger maple, two knobs are missing. there's also a little crackle on one surface thanks to a solvent spill.

I've been planning to update them to have a darker stain and new pulls - probably black stain and nickel oval seeded pulls and matching round knobs.

Now I see people putting these dressers on ebay for $2-300. Is anyone buying? Am I better off selling these (pup not included) and finding some art deco waterfall pieces that I know I'll love? FWIW my house is old style and I personally like darker, edgier styles.

If I should go ahead and fix em up, would nickel work with espresso wood or should I stick with black stain, which I have on hand?

Thanks!
Pat

I think Brushed Nickel hardware goes good with Natural wood, White, and medium dark wood tones.

If I see black furniture, it's usually Asian (lacquer). I'm not sure what hardware I would use on black, maybe solid brass or stainless steel.

I think this furniture looks good, the colors are classic and don't go out of style. You might want to sell it and start over, someone will like this.

Refinishing a real antique or changing the hardware can lower its value.
