Attaching brass finials to a Bed

I have a brass bed and the finials comprise a ball and decorative colar fastened to the brass post by a threaded rod. The ball is open at the bottom. Loose inside the ball is a sheet steel disk. The disk is larger than the ball opening so doesn't come out. The threaded rod goes through the disk and had a square nut. There's another square nut on the rod on the other side of the disk. There is a threaded hole in the top of the post that the rod screws into.

All the finials on the bed are loose when we bought it used. Is there a trick on how to tighten these finials. Turning the ball does nothing since the disk is loose inside and the ball just spins.

Is there a trick on how to tighten these finials?

Try pulling up on the ball so the nut plate inside is pulled against the side of the ball to prevent it from turning. Then turn the ball to tighten.
