refinished furniture

I have just painted some old furniture, cherry wood original. I sanded, primed and painted. The finished product was too dark. It turned out a dark taupe, not at all what the color chart looked like! I want to shabby chic the finished product but need to know a technique that might correct the "too dark" paint. Maybe a "white wash" of some sort? Open to any suggestions. Really do not want to sand and start all over.

How about another coat of paint.
Just tint your color with some white of the same brand. Add a little white, Mix well till you get the shade you want.

You can mix latex paint with water-based polyurethane to make a glaze to use over the paint. Use a white or light color paint, and try 2 parts polyurethane to 1 part paint. Add paint or polyurethane to the mix until you like the way it looks on your painted furniture.
If you used oil-based paint, you can get white stain at the hardware store to put over the paint.
