Pine, Oak, and Ceramic Tile

I am redoing a kitchen and have installed a light beige ceramic tile, Honey Beige Oak cabinets and a laminate counter top that compliments both. The walls are a darker shade beige. The dining area has tongue and groove pine paneling (3/4" thick) half way up the way, dark hardwood floors and a pine built in hutch. The top portion of th hutch has glass doors and the bottom has cheap looking plywood doors (don't think they are original.) The close proximity of the light Oak, dark pine and dark hardwood floors just doesn't look right. I'm considering painting the pine paneling and hutch with a glaze type finish. What type of preparation is needed before finishing the pine? Can anyhone recommend a good book that may have examples of finishes.
