hole fillers

what is the best product to fill nail holes with when using oil based stain, i've tried painters putty, it didn't absorb the stain & wood filler, which was worse.

I use wax crayons or putty type fillers after I stain and before I put on the finish. I have several colors and use whichever one best hides the hole.

I recently finished a large bookcase project made of birch with a maple stain. A pecan colored putty filler worked beautifully.

What kind of glue do you use, phantom? When I tried that with carpenters glue, it looked awful.

i tried the glue & saw dust, it wouldn't take stain. went to floor place, they didn't have the readywood but had wood putty in lots of different colors, found mine, works good, the crayon looked like it might have worked if melted. thanks to all.
