sticky wood finish

Unfortunately, this is the first time I've stripped and stained a piece of furniture.

I recently stripped down a desk and stained it with commercial wood stain. I left the stain on too long, so it was really thick when I wiped it off. It's been about 2 weeks since then and parts of the stain still aren't dry (it's still sticky).

Are there any suggestions to help me fix this problem so I don't have to re-strip the entire desk? Or is re-stripping my only option?

Thanks in advance.

Refer to the label, if it is an oil-based stain, you may be able to remove the puddled part with some light scrubbing using a scotchbrite pad and some mineral spirits. Work over it this way and see if this won't solve the dilemma. You may need to apply another light coat of stain for uniformity. Otherwise, stripping may be your only option.

Hope this helps.
