refinishing factory finsih to dining table

HELP! I am trying to restore some of my mother's furniture for her to enjoy as long as she can...one is her walnut dining table top, damaged when her home had the dreaded "mold remediation" destruction derby. The factory finish was damaged somehow and in cleaning it half the finish (shiny part) has come off...what is the best way to proceed to restore some type of finish to it? It was purchased early 60"s. THANKS

Is the damaged part simply dull or is the finish completely off the wood?

The "damage" is where the finish has started coming off where it was attempted to be cleaned, supposedly with furniture cleaner to remove debris, paint, etc....claim was "no type of solvent" used?....no damage to actual wood, only the finish; it is a beautiful simple "modern" style, but the top looks awful where the finish on the edges looks almost down to the wood, and the rest of the "shiny" finish is dull, circled, streaked, etc....it has to be covered and it is a shame...just would like to make the table top look like a "finish" again; doesnt necessarily have to be just like it was (with the glossy finish) but show the beauty of the wood in its simplicity and elegance..Directions or suggestions most welcomed!
