repair cedar Lane chest

Need help in repairing and refinishing the cedar lined Lane chest my dad gave my mother when they married (1950). The finish outside is very dry and appears to be like a thin wood "layer" that was placed over the chest. The pattern appears to be in sections that have the grain going in different directions? Pieces in small sections have broken or peeled off, can they be replace and with what? What is best to generally clean and refinish this sentimental piece?

You could strip, repair the veneer, stain and refinish as you like. Talk to Lane to see about replacement veneer for the damaged areas. Repairing veneer is not for the faint of heart. It makes more sense to remove the veneer and replace it.

Hope this helps.
