Shiny spot on the finish

Can you help?

We received a nightstand from my family which is relatively new (from a modern furniture store---Upcountry, to be exact) and they had tried to fix a waterstain on the top. Apparently, a glass of water was mistakenly placed on some papers which then bled down into the surface.

In any case, there was a white spot on the surface and also black shapes in the wood where the paper had been.

They tried to polish it with some toothpaste, which did remove the white spot. The black images are still there and are bearable, but now, where they had polished, the finish has quite a bit more shine and reflection than the rest of the wood.

Is there any way of dulling that shiny spot and blending it in with with the rest of the finish without completely refinishing the piece?

Polish the entire top to make the sheen match.
