Oak Credenza and filing cabinets

We have a 1980's style Oak filing cabinet and credenza. It is stained in the classic oak color. I would like to paint it black to match some other pottery barn office furniture I have. Can I just get a power sander and sand the stain off? Then Paint? Any advice would be appreciated.

You would likely never get all the stain off with sanding. It would be better to strip, then paint.

Alternatively, you could clean it with mineral spirits to remove the grease, grit, and grime that inevitably accumulate along with any wax on a piece of furniture. Then knock down any glossiness with a green scotchbrite pad. Next, prime with Zinsser 123 and paint as desired.

Hope this helps.
