Can I stain a new pine book shelf

I just completed building a full wall pine book shelf.
I made it all myself, it is just smooth unfinished pine. I tried to stain an extra piece of wood but the stain does not want to really sink into the wood. Is it possible to stain it or would i have to paint the wood a colour instead? I would really like to show off the natural wood look....

Thanks for your help!

Pine can be tricky to stain. It tends to blotch and take stain unevenly. I recommend a clear coat or paint.

To stain it, sand it no more than 120 grit. You can try the conditioners for stain, but I have not had favorable results from using them. The results seem to be the same as not using one. Wipe on the stain and wipe it off. Repeat as needed per directions from the manufacturer to achieve the darkness you want.

You might consider the stain and finish product where the stain and finish are mixed together. This is less likely to blotch and be uneven.

I try to avoid making anything from pine. It is too much trouble and mess.

Hope this helps.
