Question HELP! Staining Oak Coffee Table

I have stripped and sanded my oak coffee table and have also applied 2 coats of onyx coloured water-based stain, but it is not taking very well. Can I put an oil-based onyx coloured stain over this and finish with an oil-based varathane?
Please let me know, thanks for your help!!!

Yes, you can use the oil over the latex. Do a sample in a hidden spot. The longer you leave it on before wiping, the darker it will be. Just don't give it time to start drying.

If the water based stain is not taking well, the oil based stain may not take any better. Is this stain supposed to develop the expected color on oak? In general, water based stains will build with repeated applications to some extent. Alkyd stains pretty much run their course by the second coat.

If you plan to change to alkyd products, be sure that the water based products are completely dry.

Hope this helps.
