Door not taking stain

We are having difficulties getting a portion of a pine, hollow-core door to take stain. Before refinishing, we sanded it down. We applied the stain and it took everywhere with the exception of about a 8"x8" area. Others have told us to use products to remove the stain, sand, and restain -- we've tried but without any luck. It appears that only minimal stain is ever absorbed into the wood -- it continues to be a 'slick' finish regardless of how much sanding we do. Any other ideas before we replace the door?

Kelly:

Sometimes the glue from manufacture can penetrate through the panels to cause the problems you mention. The only thing I can suggest is to switch to a gel type stain. This is a thicker body stain which will allow you to even out the color.

Allow at least 48 hours to dry after application before applying a finish.
