Restaining cabiets a different shade

I'm getting ready to restain my kitchen cabinets. That is, the are currently stained and I ahve not not any prep work yet. Is there a product (stain) that will allow me to stain a new color over the old...or do I need to sand off the old stain first?

First, you didn't mention whether your cabinets are finished - I suspect they are. If that IS the case, you need to strip the cabinets first.
Now, as far as the stain is concerned, yes you can apply a new stain over what's already there - but the color you get will be a mix of the two - new and old. You won't cover the old stain up.
Trying to apply a lighter stain than you currently have is a waste of time and money without thoroughly sanding out the cabinets to remove the old stain. You may have to bleach to remove the stain from stubborn areas.
