help with wood bedframe

I am building a frame for one of my boys...making one of those "rustic" beds. I have made the 4 corner posts out of 4x4 oak and now i am making end pieces out of 2x6 pine. everything is ready to go but now i have to mount the end pieces.

i am scared of splitting the pine when i screw it on to the oak. any ideas/help? i have 3" wood screws that i am using and i am going to drill real small pilot holes but if the wood splits i am in "screwed'ville".

Sawdustguy, Thanks,- I really like that product, wish I'd known when I built a bunkbed last year. I drilled pilot holes and used real thin 4" screws, but this Rockler thing apparently allows it to be easily taken apart. Neat !
