re-staining

I am moving into a new home, and one room has extensive wooden pannelling tat has been painted gloss white. I am planning on stripping this off and seeing what the wood underneath is like. The seller told me it was painted because the wood was stained with a dark colour. If this is the case, can I restain it a lighter colour, or do I need to remove the dark stain first? If so, how easy is this to do?

Many thanks in advance

Andy

When you strip the paint, the old stain and finish will come off, too. Then you will see the bare wood and be able to decide what color to use then.
