staining wood veneer paneling

My husband and I just bought a house built in 1961 which has a significant amount of paneling throughout. Most of it appears to be a wood veneer. My husband would like to stain the paneling in the dining room a dark mahogany for richer look. Is this possible with a wood veneer? What type of prep should be done? Is there a particular type of stain he should use? Thanks for any assistance!

I assume the paneling already has a finish on it. You may try using a colored polyurathane but this won't drasticly change the color. To restain you would have to strip the finish first then stain and topcoat.
