Antiquing and Painting Bedside Table

I have a smooth light colored bedside table made of particle board that I am really bored of ! I would like to give it an antique look and paint it colorfully much like the renovated wood work you see in Contemporary furniture like American Pie.

Any advice on the best way to achieve this look is much appreciated.

I was browsing Lowes paint section the other day for some stain and I noticed Krylon spray paint has come a long way. There are several different antique type paints there. They are a 2 part kit. One is a base, and the other is an overcoat. They had antiqued brass, nickel, antique whitewash, and several others. Check em out! They looked pretty cool, even had a sample poster with what the finished results would look like!
