I have just built a bookcase using white pine which is a very soft wood. The case is going to get some rough useage by a youngster. There will be a potential for some nicks and dings. What is the toughest and most durable finish I can use (varnish, poly, shelac, etc) that is also relatively easy to apply? My goal is to reduce the amont of potential damage created by heavy usage. Hello, I need some helpful advice on repairing my grandmother's old veneer dining room table. First, the veneer on the table top is in good condition (no cracks or sections haven't been peeled off); however, there is a large water stain that has removed the finish and stain. The table is a really dark stain, by the way. There are some edges underneath the table which are chipping away or have spilt. My question is should or can I strip off the old finish and stain and apply a new stain to match the rest of the table? Can a I redo the underside edges with new veneer strips and then stain them as well. I don't think it will be that difficult but, again, I have never done this type of thing before. I have some working knowledge of wood. This table was used as a computer desk and some of the finish has been worn off but not the stain. If I need to reveneer the entire table is this something I can do myself or should I leave it up to a professional? If this is a task I can do myself, I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to proceed. Thanks, Brian
