renewing finish on tired kitchen cabinets

I'd like to renew the finish on my kitchen cabinets. I've tried the "cabinet magic" route as well as the lemon oil polishes but the sheen they impart lasts for several hours and disappears. Are there any remedies to imparting a longer lasting furniture luster to kitchen cabinets short of the lengthy process of totally stripping them down and restaining and recoating them. Is there any product that can recoat the existing finish and impart a new coating with a luster??
Thanks for your help!

You should be able to apply a coat of poly to the cabinets to freshen them up. First you need to remove ALL the wax and cleaners you have applied, then a light sanding, wipe down with a tac cloth and you are ready for the poly.

Just to play it safe [poly isn't always compatible with all finishes] clean an inconspicuous spot and apply a test spot of poly to make sure it adheres when applied. Shouldn't be a problem with a well worn finish.
