Red face can you repair veneer on a table that has been sanded through?

I have a pine dining room table that I have had for 30 years. The top really needed to be sanded and refinished. I sanded the table and my husband came behind me to help and he sanded all the way through the veneer on a couple of places. I went ahead and stained it but it looks horrible so I keep a table cloth on it. Is there anyway of repairing this? Can I remove the veneer totally? Can you replace the veneer, or is that very pricey? I have even thought about doing a different type of top on it? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The sanded through areas can be repaired, but that calls for materials and technique that say "Get a professional".

The veneer can be removed and new applied, but it would probably be a lot easier to prep the existing top and apply the veneer over it.

As to finding the materials and instructions, let me suggest two sites to visit:

http://www.rockler.com

or
