water based stain

Today, after years of using oil based tried for the first time water based stain. Is it me or is this stuff just not worth the hassle? The main problem I ran into was blending. When staining an intricate piece like I was today it's impossible to not get some stain on areas that are yet to be stained. When you do eventually stain it the marks easily blend if your using oil based. But this stuff, forget about it. Totally dry. Plus I'm fast. Has anyone had any success with this stuff?

It is hard to teach an old dog [me] new tricks. With the exception of the odd job where an interior latex stain is preferable I agree using oil base stain is the only way to go.

But then most times I don't care for the water based poly/varnish either
