How to refinish woodwork in kitchen

Our home was built three years ago. The countertops in the kitchen and bathroom have wood edgings that obviously were not well sealed as water has seeped under the finish and now needs to be redone. The finish is natural. What is the best way to seal this wood? I have had this setup before and had it last forever in good condition, so sure am disappointed but want to get it fixed soon so no further damage occurs. Thanks for the input. Love this forum!

Of course you plan on sanding down the surface and re-polyurethaning (is that a word?) them, right? I think you are having a problem where the wood meets the horizontal surface, whether it be tile or laminate. This is the crack or opening you need to concentrate on either with clear silicone or another color to match your grout if it is tile. Water is seeping between the layers and soaking up from behind.

Chemical stripper okay?

Thanks for the tips. Was afraid we'd have to get serious about this. Would using a chemical stripper be okay and easier? Thanks!

Look in to the Formby's line of paint removers. You apply it with 000 steel wool, which in essence removes the finish. Read the instructions and heed the safety warnings, but you will get a good job, as you are concentrating your application, rather than just brushing it on and having to wash it off with a hose.
