how long to wait after staining

how long to wait after staining before you apply polyurethane thanks

The instructions on your can of stain will tell you that. Often it will be 8 hours.

Typically, I wait 24 hours when using Minwax products, which is probably longer than they recommend. Some of that will depend on the temperature and humidity where the wood is being stored.

I've seen some products such as Watco Danish finishes recommend waiting 72 hours. Waterbased stains can often be finished in 2 hours. But as I mentioned, your particular brand of stain will have their own recommendation that you should follow.

I agree it is best to go by the directions on the can. Cool or humid weather can slow down the drying time. Pros will often seal the stain sooner but if you aren't carefull the sealer/poly will lift the stain making for a big mess!!!

thanks the can says 8 hours it is minwax i guess i was just trying to rush it thanks for the help
