Refinish a Grand Piano?

Our grand piano has water damage to the exterior. On one side of the piano, the finish has cracked and in spots the wood underneath is exposed. Is there a viable way to refinish a part of the piano -- if not perfectly, then at least reasonably well? Or is this best left to an expensive piano technician?

If the veneer is peeling, it is better to have it repaired by an expert. Refinishing is also best left to a pro, if you want it to look like new, and you skills are not above average.
