Lighten Stain on New Piece

I ordered an oak TV console from a catalogue, and it was just delivered. It's a great piece of furniture, but the stain is quite a bit darker than I had expected. The photo in the catalogue appeared to be a medium oak, but it is much darker. Does anyone know of a way to lighen the stain somewhat without causing any damage.

Thanks,

Michael

Welcome to the diy forumks Michael

It is a lot harder to lighten stain than it is to darken it! You would probably need to strip and redo to significantly lighten it. I'd either learn to like it or return it.

A lot of work involved to lighten the stain. I agree with Mark - return it or live with it.
