Refinishing Oak Veneer Computer Desk

Hi:

We have a 5 year old oak veneer Sauder computer desk. The desk is very functional and useful, but we hate the oak look of the desk. Is it possible to repaint or refinish it to some darker wood colors like Mahogany/ cherry or even black is fine.

We were originally planning to sand/prime (oil based) and paint it with black paint. Is this the way to go about??

Your suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks

You may be able to sand lightly, clean and apply a coat or 2 of minwax polyshades to darken/alter the color some. If you go this route be sure to finish it off with regular clear poly - if tinted poly gets worn off it takes some of the color with it.
