Smile Removing unwanted stain

Hi, I'm staining my staircase and, after applying two successful coats of stain, decided to try to darken it slightly by applying a third coat. Anyway, this third coat will not dry completely and a friend has told me that wood will not take more than two coats of stain. My question is how do I best set about removing this excess stain? PS I'm quite happy with the shade now.

Anytime you apply more than 1 coat of stain you are apt to have problems. It is possible to spray poly over top of the not quite dry stain, when that is dry you can sand lightly and brush on poly with no problems. While expensive, they do sell aersol cans of poly.

Mineral spirits should wash off the excess stain but it may be hard to control the amount you wash off - danger of light and dark areas
