Finish on 5 yr old table getting so sticky

that newspaper and other paper products now stick as if there was glue stick attached. I believe the original finish is a light polyurethane. The table is round with both pie shaped wood sections and rounded exterior border pieces with grains moving in different directions. This is a beautiful table that I don't want to ruin, but we can no longer eat beakfast and put the newspaper on it because of this problem (it has been used pretty hard).

Is there some way to treat this sticky problem without stripping, restaining and resealing it?

thanks in advance

Properly applied polyurethane will not do this. Not to say that is not what you have. I assume you have tried to clean it??? Wipe a spot underneath with paint thinner, lacquer thinner and solvent(denatured) alcohol, If any of these affect the finish it is not poly. If one does, which one????? My guess would be lacquer thinner. Many inexpensive factory finishes are lacquer based, they dry quickly.
