Refinishing question

I am attempting to refinish the top of a small pedestal table. There is a round dark stain that goes deep into the wood in the middle. I don't know whether to keep sanding any deeper or just paint the table top. I wanted to restain a different color but paint may be the answer. It is solid pine..not veneer. Thanks...Marsha

Sounds as if you might have a water stain - when they are in the finish they're white - when the penetrate to the wood, they turn black.

Oxalic acid (it's a powder) should lighten if not completely remove the stain. Available at most hardware stores as well as the big boxes.
