Question

A small oak chest I am refinishing had 2 black areas on the top which didn't come out after stripping and moderate sanding. Also have 2 blackened areas on my hardwood floors from cat urine. Any ideas how to remove these stains??

Cool

Aimee:

The black marks on the chest sound like typical water stains. You'll need a bleach to get them out. Ordinary household bleach sometimes works, although I usually start out with a wood bleach (available from most home centers and paint stores).

The same procedure will work on your floor.

Be advised you need to bleach the entire surface - not just the black marks, in order to maintain color uniformity.
