Sticky Stain - NEED HELP!

Hello,

My wife and I recently purchased a 100 yr old home which still had all the original moldings. To try and clean and brighting them up we had the brillant idea off going over them with a light coat of stain. We did not sand anything first which I am now learning was our first mistake.

It has been a couple of days now and everything still very sticky. What can we do to fix this?

As I'm sure you now know - stain is to be applied to raw wood. It dries in part by being absorbed by the wood.

IMO your best bet would be to scrub off the stain with a wet thinner rag. Be sure to use fresh air ventilation and dispose of the rags properly [not inside!]

Once you've removed the stain, the trim will probably look a little better than before you applied it but we can help you figure out the best plan plan of attack to rejuvenate the woodwork.
