I was given a dining room hutch, but the finish is too dark
for my decor. I do not want to completely strip the finish off, but would like to paint and possibly stencil
it. My style is country french. I am looking for some ideas on how to go about this. I believe the wood is maple. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Almost any finish can be painted over. Scuff sand the entire surface, apply two coats of a good primer, such as KILZ or BIN, sanding after each coat has dried, and paint away.

If the finish coat of paint is an acrylic latex, you'll find stenciling a lot easier than over oil base.
