How to fix holes in veneer on kitchen cabinets?

We are going to be painting our kitchen cabinets white. They are veneer I believe but the moulding has holes in it. Picture is below. Does anyone know how I go about fixing the holes?

Maybe fill it with foam, shape it when dry, add spackling, joint compound or some other filler as needed to smooth out the foam. That should get it ready for primer and paint.

Thanks for your suggestion. I actually just filled the a holes with skewers than covered that with wood filler, than sanded. Its not perfect by a long shot but at least there is no longer a hole there.
