'Spot refinish' kitchen cabinets?

I just purchased a house that had very worn patches on the kitchen cabinets and drawers. The upper (unused) cabinets are in perfect condition, but some of the drawers are in worse shape than this picture. Is it possible to just fix the worn spots without a complete refinish job?

Yes but I don't have the talent to do it, I would refinish the entire door.

Welcome to the forums!

It looks like someone either sanded off the finish or got over zealous cleaning off grime. Try taking a rag wet with paint thinner and wipe the affected area. If that makes it look close to perfect [while it's wet with thinner] then a coat or two of oil base poly will fix it. Otherwise you may need some stain to get the coloring back. Another issue will be getting the sheen right. Generally if the repairs are a little duller than the rest looks better than if they are shinier.
