stripping mahogany

Thank you for your quick reply. I have another question. Do you think it is possible to strip and sand the mahogany bedroom set (it is dark and glossy) and get it down to a lighter wood color?

It's entirely possible, but you'll almost certainly need to bleach it.
After you've stripped the piece, wipe it down with a rag wet with lacquer thinner. The color of the wood while it's wet is very close to the color you'll get if you apply a clear finish at this point.
If you want to get it lighter, a 2 part bleach, available at most home centers and paint stores is the answer. Read and follow the directions carefully - you may have to make more than one application.
