Some advice on building a queen size platform bed frame (mostly materials)
Hi guys so I need a new bed after moving out (long story the ex got the old one) after seeing frames in my price range it is clear I can build something nicer and more sturdy myself. I have already designed it in my head my problem is materials.
I would like to build something like my old twin captains bed with draws underneath which the mattress rested on a solid piece of "wood" to save on buying a box spring and add some storage space. The main question at hand is what material to use for this layer? Would something like 1/2" MDF work well? I feel like regular plywood will get wood mites (I'm a bugafob)
I feel like I can use 2 x 4 studs for the legs and attach 1x4 to those for the internal support and have the MDF resting on top of that then use pine on the outside of that and add some sort of molding routed nicely to the outer layer
I guess the big question is what materials to use. Should I used a solid piece as the "box spring or make slats? I feel like the memory foam mattress will get funny resting on slats but the solid piece will hold moisture
Or should I do a combo of both.
Thanks
Anthony

If you think of the size of the bed I don't think a sheet of OSB or plywood would be strong enough unless you support it in the middle with at least a leg. In Central America box springs are much more rare than here. They always use hard wood slats. For a single or twin they're about 1" thick and on queen's and king's they'll have a support bar down the center and/or go up to 2" or 3" thick slats so they don't sag over the greater distance. In your case I'd do a center support with slats for the strength and if you're concerned about the memory foam bridging across the slats you could put a sheet of OSB or plywoood on top.

Build the framework for the drawers and add 1/2 inch plywood on top to support the mattress.
