what cind (Kind) of wood is this dresser

im working on refinishing a old dresser I have I got dow past the sane and the wood has two coerls to it for the life of me cant figure out what cind of wood it is Name: IMG_20140531_115703_384.jpg

It appears to be a combination of pine and poplar (greenish color). Have you considered using a chemical stripper to remove the remainder of the existing finish? May be easier with less gouging. Or are you just going to refinish the top?

Some advice on building a queen size platform bed frame (mostly materials)

Hi guys so I need a new bed after moving out (long story the ex got the old one) after seeing frames in my price range it is clear I can build something nicer and more sturdy myself. I have already designed it in my head my problem is materials. I would like to build something like my old twin captains bed with draws underneath which the mattress rested on a solid piece of "wood" to save on buying a box spring and add some storage space. The main question at hand is what material to use for this layer? Would something like 1/2" MDF work well? I feel like regular plywood will get wood mites (I'm a bugafob) I feel like I can use 2 x 4 studs for the legs and attach 1x4 to those for the internal support and have the MDF resting on top of that then use pine on the outside of that and add some sort of molding routed nicely to the outer layer I guess the big question is what materials to use. Should I used a solid piece as the "box spring or make slats? I feel like the memory foam mattress will get funny resting on slats but the solid piece will hold moisture Or should I do a combo of both. Thanks AnthonyRead More

Help identifying the natural wood on this banister

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of re finishing an old banister (huge undertaking I know) and preferably re staining so I'm trying to work out the best way to go about it, what stain to go for etc. I just wondered if anyone could confirm what kind of wood this is? Be good to better have an idea what I'm dealing with. After a quick google I'm thinking perhaps mahogany or red oak? But I know very little about wood so any confirmation would be much appreciated.
