Question Target Threshold furniture: veneer, laminate, melamine?

I have this piece of furniture from Target that I'd like to prep and paint. (It's the "Rustic" version, in case the link doesn't go directly to it.)

But I'm unclear what its surface is since the product details only say vague things like "wood finish" and "plywood/hardwood". In reading up on painting lower-end furniture, I've come across tactics for veneer, laminate, and melamine-types, but I'm unsure what this specific piece is in order to go down the correct route.

Since the backing and sides are that flimsy cardboard-like plywood, I'm guessing it's not veneer. If true, that leaves laminate and melamine. Would those two be considered the same, in terms of painting?

This is the approach I'd take, assuming my piece is truly a laminate-type:

Thanks ahead of time for the guidance, folks.
