something hot was put on the wood
#1
Hello George,
I have stripped a piece that has a black spot on the top. It looks like something hot was placed on it. How can I take it off with out discoloring the rest of the wood? I will be putting a red mahogony stain on it and was hoping that the top would all look the same. Help. Thanks

The mark may be a true burn, or may be a water mark from a flower pot. In either caaase, your best bet is oxalic acid - a wood bleach that comes in powder form.
You'll have to go over the entire top for color uniformity, as this will lighten the top clightly.
Your only other option is to sand the spot out. Again, for color eveness, you'll need to sand the entire top.
