Markings from old handles

Hello, I am trying to refinish and add different handles to a dresser but as much as I have sanded I can't get the shape of the old handles to not show. The surface is smooth but it seems as though the dressed with stained with the old handles already installed so the wood below where the handles over is lighter than the rest of the wood.

What can I do to make sure when I stain the dresser these shapes won't show through?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

here are instructions for posting pics - How to insert pictures.
Is the wood painted or stained/poly?

Great! Thanks for the quick reply.

I have added pictures of the markings I am referring to and what the original finish looked like (in the handles image) before sanding. I am new to refinishing furniture so I am honestly not sure what was used to originally finish the dresser.

Thanks for any help and the welcoming to the forum!

How are you sanding?
Is the mark a coloration or dent in the wood?

If the wood is indented something with a rigid back plate like a belt sander (carefully) or sanding block can take the surface down without following the existing contours so much. If it's a coloration problem I can only think of doing more sanding or look into bleaching or staining the wood.

The markings are color only, no indentation at all.

I used a cordless sheet sander then hand sanded with a finer grit to smooth the surface.

Are the drawer fronts solid wood or a veneer? If a veneer I'd be leery of sanding too deep and would use a chemical stripper, then sand and refinish.

The drawer fronts are solid wood.

Would you suggest keep sanding or a chemical stripper?

IF they are solid wood you can sand it smooth.
