What is this wood damage from and how can I protect against it?

This is a backyard playset. It's only about a year old. I've noticed this kind of damage that looks like it's from an animal of some kind. The playset probably needs to be stained/treated/protected anyway, so I'm wondering if there is a stain I could use to protect it from this kind of damage.

Can anyone tell what kind of damage this is and how to protect from it?

Thanks!

It looks more like the wood is chipped than from an animal or insect!

I doubt there is any type of coating that is going to stop what ever is causing that.

Sure the kids are not whacking it with something?

Unless there are claw or teeth marks not visible in the pics I also suspect rough playing by the kids. No paint/stain offers that type of protection. I'd clean it up the best I could and restain.

That's a good thought, but the kids are young and we are almost always with them outside. Could this be from deer? Or squirrels? I also thought of falling tree debris, but that's not consistent with the damage under the slide or in certain other covered spots. There is also some damage up high so the deer wouldn't be doing that. Unless deer can climb ladders in which case I have bigger problems.

Critters should leave claw or teeth marks. Maybe a mower or weedeater ??

It could be a squirrel. If you have a wildlife camera or something you could set up..... that may help you find the culprit.
