Finish on wood furniture is coming off

My son called me about the finish coming off of his furniture. It is in a room that he doesn't use very much so he didn't notice it before. He can't remember what he would have done to cause the damage. THe furnture is about 3 years old. At this point all I have is the picture.

Any idea what could have happened and how this could be repaired? Hate to make it worse.

Maybe something damp was placed on it ??
The fix would be to sand it down and refinish. Depending on how it sands out he might get by with just applying a coat or two of poly.

I would get some lacquer thinner and try it to see if it is a laquer finish.

If yes then Google lacquer finish repair.

Hopefully the to has not been waxed.

I confirmed that it is flaking off. He lives in an apartment so not too much available to deal with it. I will have him check to see if it is a lacquer finish first and see where that takes us.
