Unhappy Engine oil smell reeks!

Hi everyone!

I'm just getting into refinishing stuff. I have 4 projects on the go atm. This one is stumping me though.
I found this old shelf on the road. Looks like it was used in a mechanic shop.. smells like it too. I can't seem to get the engine oil smell out. I tried scrubbing with dish soap and a steel wool and scrubbie, then I tried sanding, then I even sealed it will a Minqwax Polycrilic. Still stinks!

I really love the patina and seafoam green. Any recommendations to either seal or remove that smell?

Pigmented shellac [BIN] is the ultimate coating for blocking stains and odors. I don't know if a clear shellac would do the same thing or not but might be worth a try. Solvent based coatings do a better job of sealing than water based ones do. Oil base poly should do better than Polycrylic but would have an amber effect on the existing paint.

Thanks marksr!
I used the Zinsser Bulls Eye clear shellac and it worked great. I used two coats and made sure to fill every crack with wood-filler first.
